Where do lice come from? 10 thousand year history

Where do lice come from? Are there more in some countries than others? These and other questions are on the minds of those who have suffered from this annoying plague at some time in their lives.

If you want to know a little history of how, when, where and why, keep reading this interesting and historical post.

Lice have accompanied human beings throughout the centuries.

Lice are not a recent human problem. According to recent studies, about six million years ago, the lice that infested hominids evolved to adapt to the new species that populated the Earth.

As humans spread throughout the planet, they also changed, and two species even emerged thanks to genetic mutation: on the one hand, the head louse, and on the other, the body louse.

Moreover, thanks to archaeological excavations, there is physical evidence of the existence of lice in people’s daily lives for thousands of years:

In northeastern Brazil, remains of lice have been found on a human head dating back to 10,000 BC.

In Israel, nits were found attached to the hair of 7,000-year-old corpses in a cave and have also been seen on 5,000-year-old mummies in Egypt.

Anti-lice methods have evolved with mankind.

As the health and aesthetic problem that it is, humans have been trying to get rid of lice for more than 3,000 years.

Around 1200 B.C., the Chinese used mercury and arsenic to fight them, the Egyptians shaved their bodies to avoid them and many tombs in Israel have been found to contain earwigs.

It is from the 1st century AD that the use of the first topical parasiticides such as Artemisia and the discovery of the first plant-based pyrethroids began to be documented.

These were used until the middle of the 19th century, when industrial products such as kerosene, vinegar-based lotions and other insecticides began to be used.
